A Focus on Dignity and Non-Violence at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy

On April 15th I was honored to lead a Dignity Day session as a HOPE Corp Volunteer through Operation HOPE (HOPE) at the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA) in Atlanta.

What is amazing is how the majority of this class of ninth graders were initially completely turned off to the idea of having to listen to yet another speaker that day as they were just returning to their classroom from an assembly that focused on the theme of 100 days of Non-Violence…so they were shifty and closed off. But about 15 minutes into our conversation some of the girls who had crossed arms were soon raising their hands and answering questions.

I started off by talking about the concept of legacy and that that day we were laying the foundation and road map for them to create and eventually leave behind a strong, dignified legacy. I had them define the term legacy in their own words and then share some of their dreams, goals and aspirations. Then as our conversation deepened I shared with them the history of how HOPE was founded, the services and programs that HOPE offers, and I started to weave a story where life included them and their legacy.


I think helping them share the names of empowered and dignified women they see in their family, community, and elsewhere who had similar or worse lives growing up helped them to see that they too could be those same type of women- that they are these women but in-training and with the potential to do more and help more in the long run because they are being equipped with the tools at a young age; and our adversity isn’t an excuse to let life pass us by or a crutch to coast through life doing and expecting the bare minimum, but a reason and motivation to excel and succeed.

These young ladies were shocked to hear that the civil rights movement as it pertained to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Ambassador Andrew Young was sparked, motivated, and pushed along due to their wives Coretta Scott King and Jean Childs Young- two women who endured and overcame adversity and strife. Hearing this information made many of these girls sit up straight in their chairs and listen intently.

                        

When I spoke about not holding grudges, and that forgiving people is not to benefit the person they were forgiving but to help themselves heal, grow, and overcome- some girls shifted in their seats their seats, a few others rolled their eyes in disbelief; but then when I mentioned Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Iyanla Vandzant and their ability to forgive their abusers and using strife as a launching pad towards success- some of the girls started naming other people like Fantasia and Tyler Perry who was sexually and physically abused and how he also overcame and pushed himself to success.

We discussed the concept of family and that it isn’t just our immediate family we need to be concerned about but our neighborhoods, cities, state, our country, and our global family. Because I know that girls can be equally as cutthroat as boys, I made sure that we had a heart-to-heart chat about trash-talking and “clowning” people and how although initially it can be lighthearted and funny, it can also be crippling and tear apart our “extended” family.

We discussed being relevant not only in this country but globally, and that true wealth (spiritual, financial, etc) can only be maintained long term by leading a dignified life, not by living up to the negative stereotypes that are projected globally about Black females. We discussed self-empowerment and not waiting on the government or specific programs to help us, that we have to help ourselves. That we shouldn’t be waiting for someone else to pick up trash on our sidewalks- we should pick it up ourselves.

We shouldn’t be waiting for someone else to cover the graffiti on our walls and buildings- we should paint over it ourselves; we shouldn’t wait for someone else to beautify our streets and parks with trees and flowers- we should plant them ourselves. I explained that they should be volunteering in their community through church or some other organization taking pride in restoring, building, maintaining, and beautifying their neighborhoods.

We had a pretty good time. We laughed and talked about boys and expectations of being respected by males and all people when you carry yourself with respect and dignity. We discussed the language of money and being financially literate, and how this literacy will empower them. It was refreshing to see that many of them have savings accounts and that two of the students had traveled abroad- one to London and the other to the Bahamas. Two young passport carriers living in an underserved and underrepresented area of Atlanta- doesn’t that give you hope? It gives me hope and encourages me to continue my work in the community, and my work through Operation HOPE.

I hope more men and women find it in their hearts to invest one hour of their time at least once per month to volunteer in a church, in a class room, or in a youth center through Operation HOPE. One person can make a difference!

>Banking on Our Future: Taking Back Our Schools and Community

>Today I visited a middle school in Atlanta, Georgia to share a lesson on financial literacy with a group of young ladies, grades 6-8, who meet with me for roughly one hour during their art class. This is my third visit to this particular class. I visit their school as a HOPE Corp Volunteer through the Operation HOPE (HOPE) Banking on Our Future (BOOF) program. After my last visit next week, I will be returning independent of HOPE to continue reinforcing the principles and skills I have shared with them the past few weeks. I also intend to share other valuable lessons and skills that I truly believe these students need to know in order to survive and thrive in this gigantic, constantly-changing world.

When I see them I see young African-American girls who are faced with challenges of fitting in and being a part of the status quo, or stepping out and bringing about the change they want to see in their lives and in their community. I see young girls who could thrive in their studies and excel in life as leaders and change agents, but some of them would rather settle for mediocrity because they assume that is what is expected of them. Some of them have bought into the lies and imagery they see on the news, in movies and music videos; and what they hear in songs. Some of them only see what is around them, but do not take the time to dream for what could be beyond. Some look at their family situation and are content with that also being their future. Some have seen a cyclical pattern of behavior that sucks the life and hope out of people- and they don't conceive of how they can break the cycle. Some have bought the lie that they are not as smart and gifted as the average student. There are a few who have bought the label of being "special needs" and are content not pushing beyond this negative threshold.

Then there are the ones whose eyes still shine, who clearly dream big dreams, who want for more, who see a life in college and outside the boundaries of a neighborhood plagued by lack of hope and faith. These girls are more than the stereotypical pretty girl 'eye-candy' most would claim them to be; they are gifted and intelligent. Some of these girls are clear that their 'now' will be their 'past' because they have goals and aspirations of becoming educated career-women. There are a few girls in this class who are dreamers, but they are nervous to speak up and speak out in fear of being teased and criticized. They are the silent wells of hope, that believe that their dreams can come true but it is safer to work towards their goals silently than sharing outwardly. These young ladies smile through their eyes even in pain.

All of these young ladies are our future. Not to be forgotten. Not to be statistically categorized as 'beyond reach'. Not to be discounted as merely future booty-popping, sexually driven females who will amount to nothing except recipients of state-assistance, pole-swinging strippers, or guests on the Maury Povich or Jerry Springer shows. These girls told me today that they aspired to become pediatricians, chefs, and teachers- they have the potential to reach their career goals- they have the potential to afford to write the mock $10k checks they wrote today in class. They have the potential to live a life far-better than the one they have today. They have the potential to learn the lessons their elders were not taught, so they can have superior credit, own a home, own their car, travel the world, and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

We need to take back our schools and our communities. We need to stand up, speak up and speak out. We need to create a flow of communication between the state, neighborhoods, school districts, administrators, teachers, parents, and the students. Everyone must work to develop a system that works. Without total buy-in from these stakeholders, the system will fail and our country will suffer an unimaginable fate. We need to stop talking about it and start doing something. Parents, teachers, and administrators have to come together in order to effectively communicate what is needed and required for our youth to succeed both in and outside of school. We need more mentors coming to the schools, speaking to the students, working with the school personnel and the families of the students.

We need parents to be more engaged in the learning process, not just when they want to come to the school for a confrontation with a teacher or administrator. We need parents to take the time to ask, see, and know what is going on with their children in school and in the neighborhood. We need parents to ask for help when they need it; help with tutoring their children; help with showing their children a buffet of positive role models to learn from and aspire to become. If you are a single parent and your work schedule is hectic- ask for help to effectively connect with your child and their teacher(s). Parents need to stop relying on teachers to handle all of the teaching and disciplining of their children. What is taught in school is to be reinforced in the home. What is taught in the home should be a positive example displayed and expressed at school.

Teachers need to re-engage and reconnect, not waiting until a child has reached a failing grade- but showing care and concern once that child falls below a "B". Teachers need to take the time to reach out and talk to the students who clearly need more positive reinforcement. If you know that the vast majority of your students come from home environments filled with negative images and influences, why would you perpetuate this same negativity in the classroom? If these children are living in environments of fear, hopelessness, and diminishing faith- why would you not want to create and maintain an environment where they can feel safe and loved?

So many schools have signs around their campuses claiming a 'commitment to excellence', yet mediocrity is the norm. We have upset, frustrated, and disconnected parents who yell at upset, frustrated, and disconnected administrators- who then yell at upset, frustrated and disconnected teachers- who walk into their classrooms and yell at upset, frustrated, and disconnected students- who only model the behavior of their upset, frustrated and disconnected parents. The cycle of behavior won't stop until we stop it; until we stop passing the buck and blaming everyone else for our problems.

Historically the undervalued, underserved, underrepresented has always banded together to bring themselves out of the depths of darkness. In the 1950s we fought for our children's equal education rights. In the 1960s and 1970s we raised our standards even higher for teaching and education. Even in the early-to-mid-1980s our children knew that all eyes were on them; the administrators, teachers, the neighborhood, and the parents were all on the same page- and our children knew to walk the straight line.

Where did we go wrong? When did we stop caring? When did our vision of role models shift from the intelligent, courageous, and driven change agents- to the hard-core, lazy, thugs and 'barbies'? When did we go from working towards self-empowerment to self-entitlement? What are you doing to take back your community? Stop making excuses and start doing something. NOW! It takes a village to raise a child- we must reunite our village. We have to be the change we want to see!

October 20th Global Dignity Day was celebrated, embraced, and shared around the world in 50 countries including here in the United States. I volunteered to speak with Ms. Crawford's 8th grade class at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia through Operation HOPE's Banking on Our Future (BOOF) program. I was there not just as a volunteer, but as a human being seeking out other human beings so that we could work together to heal our world from the plague of fear. We say that the children are our future, but we rarely go to them to see and ask how we can help them make the future bright. I was partnered that day with a wonderful woman, Mrs. Carol Quiller who has a background in accounting and works for the Internal Revenue Service. We spoke with the students about dignity, Global Dignity Day, financial literacy, and being financially responsible so that they could lead dignified lives.

Ask a child what 'dignity' means to them, and after a few prompts the answers will flow from them like a stream. You can ask the same of adults and some may ponder a moment because they are 'thinking', and formalizing their thoughts; while the child is merely feeling. A student in grades 4-12 is experiencing a flood of rapid changes on a regular basis. They have been thrust into an environment that changes faster than the seasons. As they attempt to find comfort in their own body, they also seek the approval and acceptance of their peers, and the guidance and protection of their teachers. This is an easier feat to accomplish for the student who clearly has etched out their position in the 'popular' crowd. This is not so easy for the student who blends in to the background so much so that they almost seem invisible.

There is a hunger in the eyes of the child who has grown to realize that they have considerably less than others, that they are economically 'poor', and that others know this to be truth. These children want more not only for self, but for their families. They desire to climb above their piles of poverty and the shame others try to place on their shoulders. They want to live the life of a person with dignity. They want to walk with their heads up, back straight, and shoulders tall with honor and self-respect. They want others to treat them with the respect that they deserve, or as one student in Ms. Crawford's classroom said, "I want to be treated like a human being. I bleed and have feelings just like everyone else."

Ms. Crawford's students shared not only what the principle of dignity means to them, but they acknowledged times when they were not being dignified, and ways in which they can do right by doing good. They excitedly shared the names of loved ones, teachers, mentors, and public figures who they believe walk upright in dignity. To see the 'light bulb' turn on when I shared with them various examples of how we can slowly peel away the layers of a person, leaving them without a sense of dignity- they could clearly empathize. Some even shared stories about how they felt when they were teased or picked on, as well as how they felt after teasing or bullying another student. They identified with the homeless person on the street, because some of them have experienced either first or secondhand what it is like to not have a home all your own. They could empathize with not having the latest in clothing, accessories, and gadgets. They know how it feels to be stared at, to hear the smirks and comments, and to feel alone.

When I quoted Operation HOPE's Founder, Chairman, and CEO, John Hope Bryant as saying, "Hurt people, hurt people" a few of the students admitted that they have hurt others in the past simply because they were in pain and they knew they could. Ms. Crawford's class could also identify with the qualities of an effective, positive leader, and came to grips with the fact that gossip and rumors are a surefire way of leading a life as a mere follower of fear, not a leader of hope and dignity. Their ability to synthesize their thoughts and feelings, and understand why they and others do what they do was impressive. Adults could learn a lot by sitting in a classroom for a couple of hours. They could also learn how we as role models either provide a negative example or a positive one, we are either showing these children the right path to take or the one that will lead them to prison or the grave.

This is also a class of financially literate young adults. Some have savings accounts, and most have found positive ways to ask their family for money, or earn it through babysitting, mowing the lawn, and doing chores. The majority of the class raised their hands when asked if they planned to attend a college or university. One student said that her goal was to attend UCLA. They are a very focused and goal-oriented group of 12-14 year olds, some even understanding the various financial aid options that would pay for the college education, such as grants, scholarships and student loans. They also were confident in their abilities to supplement these options with their incomes derived from working part-time and full-time jobs in college.

The entire class understood the difference between wants and needs, and quickly grasped the trappings of predatory lending. It did not take Mrs. Quiller five minutes to explain to them how to read, comprehend and calculate interest rates before they could see how much consumers were losing on high interest payments to payday loan centers, check cashing facilities, and some credit cards who market to those with poor credit. One student raised his hand and said, "I could end up paying back the payday loan place my whole paycheck when you add the interest in there, how would I pay my monthly bills?", and another student said, "I'm gonna focus on being a cash man, spending what I have, and not what I hope to have. If I don't have it then I don't need it."

I love working with children, I love to see their "a-ha" moments when something I have taught them 'clicks'. Over the years I have found myself growing an even deeper connection with children who don't fit the 'mold'. Those students of meager means, those who are labeled 'average' or 'below-average', the odd-balls, the ones who adults would rather medicate than counsel, and the ones who are highly unlikely to be voted "most popular", "most attractive", or "most likely to succeed". I grew up one of the popular girls in school, but unlike the stereotypical image we associate with a person from this crowd, I was and still am accepting of all people no matter their socio-economic background, the color of their skin, their gender, religion, or sexual orientation. To me we are all a part of a huge extended family, and we can all learn from each other. No matter how much money you earn, how you look or what you think about me, you are my brothers and sisters. I believe that this is what made me popular and so well liked, more so than my looks, intelligence and athleticism, it was that I embraced everyone.

What I noticed growing up was that those who did not 'fit in' were ostracized and cast away to sit with the other 'undesirables'. So I did the unthinkable and invited them to hang with me and my group of friends whenever they wanted. It is amazing how you can break the mold of the status quo when you choose to lead and do the right thing, even when the masses are doing something else. Ms. Crawford's students want to go against the grain, they want to shift the global paradigms that dictate to the world, and they want to do right even when doing wrong is easier. These students want to be accepting of others, because they know how it feels not to be accepted. They are willing to go the opposite way of the crowd because they want to be leaders of dignity, not followers of fear. They want all mankind to live the life they were born to live, with inalienable rights- that can never truly be taken away. These students have added one more layer of hope in my heart. They are like sheep in the pasture just waiting to be led the correct way.

I ask my peers, my fellow adults, to take one hour out of your day even if it's only once a month and go speak to a group of children in your community, at your church, or at a nearby school. You will be amazed at what you learn in that short period of time, and how great you will feel during and after that brief exchange. I want to thank Operation HOPE for providing me with the opportunity to speak about dignity, financial literacy, and shifting our global paradigm. I would also like to send a big thank you to the co-founders of the Dignity Project we call Global Dignity Day, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, John Hope Bryant, and Professor Pekka Himanen. >4th of July with John Hope Bryant and Operation HOPE

>I enjoyed every second at the 4th of July Celebration at Bryant Park, hosted by my dear friend John Hope Bryant and Operation HOPE. John posted pictures from the event on his blog Monday. Yes, I am in some of the pictures; I’ve been told over the years that I seem to avoid the camera at events- but you will see that I was there and having a blast…besides, Guy Green the awesome photographer (and friend of John Bryant) skillfully captured me when I didn’t even know he was around.

It was a great turnout with over 100 guests, 35 of those invited were incoming freshmen from  Morehouse College, who this year will be distinguished, “Morehouse Men”. You will also notice some familiar faces such as the incredible Ambassador Andrew Young and his amazing wife, Carolyn Young, and some of their family members and close friends; Martin Luther King III and his awesome wife Arndrea Young, along with their beautiful daughter, Yolanda; Elder Bernice King, Ms. Christine King Farris (the sister of the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), Chris Tucker, and many more.

John Bryant called on the highly talented Leon Timbo, Chantae Cann, and bandmates to bless us with their soul-stirring voices and music throughout the day. Something else that stirred our soul was the food that was served. It was amazing. We had ribs, teriyaki chicken burgers, macaroni and cheese, pasta salad, and more tasty morsels. Everyone wanted to know how the caterer, David DeCuir made his tasty mango iced tea… I can still taste it! 

In the pictures be sure to check out John Bryant’s mother, she is beyond incredible. This woman is amazing, beautiful, intelligent, gifted, poised, humble, graceful, has a great sense of humor, and a smile and laugh that makes you feel good all over. There’s a reason why women like her look and act 20 years younger- they live and breathe the essence of life and good living. They are too blessed to be stressed. Spend time with Ms. Juanita Smith and you will see where her son got some of his wisdom, spark, pizzazz and good looks.

I was glad that my sister Alexandra, my cousin Princess, and my friend Ericka came to the BBQ. Ericka even brought her nephew Marcus and my two youngest Godson’s (who had plenty of fun playing and receiving compliments on how adorable they are).

>Operation HOPE Opens the Doors to Atlanta Regional Office

>Last night I had the honor of attending the ribbon cutting and open house reception for Operation HOPE at their Atlanta regional office located inside the 191 Peachtree Tower building. 

Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman and CEO, John Hope Bryant welcomed everyone and shared information about Operation HOPE, the services they provide, their goals for the city of Atlanta and other communities around the world. Financial literacy, hope, dignity, self-empowerment and self-sufficiency through a hand up not a hand out are the tools that Operation HOPE teaches and instills in children and adults. 

Joining Mr. Bryant were Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall (and HOPE Board Member); Candace Byrd, the Chief of Staff for the City of Atlanta, Office of the Mayor; Lance Triggs, Operation HOPE’s Executive VP, Chief of HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Centers; Ambassador Andrew Young, who along with the numerous hats he wears, also serves as HOPE Global Spokesman; and Martin Luther King III, President and CEO of The King Center.  

This evening also served as the official launch of the Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline and the HOPE Consumer Credit Crisis Hotline. The former provides free foreclosure prevention counseling and loan modification assistance. Initially launched in Los Angeles in 1997, it is now operating nationwide. The latter was launched this year, providing free services to individuals who have questions and need answers about resolving their credit issues.

>Calling on the Community

Let me first say that although this post is directed towards African Americans, it can be applicable for any group of people in a similar socio-economic position. I have geared it towards Black people because our culture is one that is strained and off-balance because as we have mounting political influence, our largest influence economically happens to be as consumers and not producers in the marketplace. We have the designer clothes, jewelry, and cars, but the majority of us are not homeowners, business owners, or major investment portfolio holders. This in turn leaves our children to imitate what they see; perpetuating a generational cycle of poverty, reduced feelings of hope, and misguided visions of prosperity through unethical and illegal methods.

Wanting and finding ways for our children to have (and experience) more and greater than us used to be at the forefront of our minds. I’m not saying that we don’t still do this, what I’m saying is that there isn’t a total cultural move for this as in the past, and as present in many other cultures. We used to push for excellence…now there is a settling agreement for mediocrity…at most that our sons become entertainers or athletes to “take care of mama” and that our daughters “land a good man” or “hurry up and get a baby”. Yes, I know that we have been hearing and singing a similar tune for many moons…but we didn’t hear the nonsense in songs and music videos- we do now!

We have (and schools are pigeon-holing our children to take) options in schools to get a modified type of high school diploma that says you graduated but there’s a catch…your classes only equip you to go to technical or community colleges, not 4 year colleges and universities. Unfortunately if Black students hang on long enough and don’t drop out, many of them receive this modified degree. The high school gets their state and federal monies, but the student in the end suffers greatly. Some colleges don’t honor the conditional diploma, which means either returning to a program to earn their diploma or getting a GED.

In Georgia the cost of attending a technical or community college is ridiculously EXPENSIVE! Unlike California that offers the Cal Grant and Board of Governor’s Grant (BOGG) that will cover the cost of your registration/tuition, Georgia’s community colleges seem more suitable to middle class families who can afford shelling out thousands in tuition each semester. It’s a catch-22 if you’re not “poor” enough to get state/federal assistance… because that means you have to pay the costs out-of-pocket or receive a scholarship.

You have some teachers and leaders in education who are apathetic and indifferent. If family and teachers aren’t amped up and believing in kids, how in the world can the majority of our kids be amped up about their future? High energy, positive educators are contagious just like a smile or laugh…the same is true of low energy, negative educators. If we keep finding money in the budget to pay school district leaders, but not enough to keep smaller class sizes, provide the schools the necessary resources for full-circle learning for students and teachers; and money to keep schools open then we further cripple our youth…and the majority of the time these youth are Black and Brown.

I love the public school system, I spent 9 years in the public school system (first through third in private) but with the current state of affairs I fear that when I have children that they would have to receive supplemental educational support (beyond what they would receive at home) because they would be vying for the attention and guidance of a teacher who has to also tend to the needs of 30+ other students…and that’s simply not acceptable!

I want the excellence of private school in the public realm…heck right now even many nursery schools are substandard…simply over-priced babysitters. That is why more Black parents are opting for private school…some shelling out enough in tuition to pay for a college education. It pains me because I want the best for my children, while at the same time wanting to see the public school system revived and strengthened in the Black community.

I don’t want to be working hard on the grassroots level for my community and for public schools, but then my children are reaping the rewards of private education…seems hypocritical.

My mom and dad taught me how to read, write, etc very early. I could read by age two. By the time I was five I was tested into 2nd grade in all subjects, but because of my age they opted to put me in 1st grade so my level of maturity would be well-balanced. My dad was determined that I would outshine the masses not simply because of my looks, but rather because of my intelligence. My beauty is merely the cherry on top of that huge ice cream sundae…not the other way around.

This focus on education and providing a child with a competitive footing (and possible advantage) is over-shadowed with the cry of Black folks (and other working parents) saying they don’t have time because they are “working” and “tired” so they defer ALL teaching and disciplining to teachers…which isn’t possible!
There is NO WAY a teacher can give the required individual attention to work with each of their 30+ students on a daily (or every two days) basis. They have a limited reach which leaves our kids short-changed, and everyone blaming everyone else.

It is going to take the concerted efforts of the community as a whole to take back the community and our schools. Folks have to stop waiting on the powers that be, stop waiting for white America, or Black politicians to “save us” and instead get our butts up and save ourselves. We need to return to effective and efficient after-school programs with a focus on tutoring and classwork/homework support. We need volunteers to return to the community and take one to two hours out of their day (that they would normally spend watching TV, on the Internet, shopping, sleeping, or talking on the phone) and sit down with students who are sponges and thirsty for knowledge.

This movement also needs to return to the Black church opening it’s doors during the week and on Saturdays to provide the space for the community…for FREE! If the church wants an answer to getting the youth back into their congregation…it’s called doing what you were called to do by God and that’s reaching out to His children on every level. Open your doors so they can receive the necessary education to survive and thrive in society, then keep the doors open and they will willingly return to receive God’s Word!

We sang all those negro spirituals about deliverance, our legacy, strength in numbers, how the church was a resource, and a belief that God was our source for all we needed, and that He “chose us” for a reason…yet many of us have turned deaf, dumb, and blind to the harsh realities that in many ways we have stumbled and fell backwards beyond our troubled times in the 60s; a time when we had grown empowered as a people, and understood our power.

Some people may have had issues with the Black Panthers, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X but dang it they showed us our economic worth and the value of patronizing Black-owned businesses first, and creating our own businesses. Those seeds were planted… just because a few seedlings wilted off doesn’t mean that with some water the other seeds can’t grow into thousands of beautiful parks. We are equipped to have both political AND economic strength (as producers not simply consumers), we just either:

1) misplaced the instructions, 2) have difficulty reading and interpreting them, or 3) we have them and due to the issues with interpretation we don’t trust any one person or group’s interpretation so we’re stagnant with our head in the sand.

It’s going to take individual seeds to grow for the rest to trust that the instructions are correct…I can think of a few organizations such as Operation HOPE (and the many branches that make up their tree) who are talking the talk and walking the walk. John Hope Bryant, Quincy Jones, Ambassador Andrew Young, QD3, Tyrese Gibson and others are united to make smart sexy again through Operation HOPE’s 5MK Initiative that aims to equip our youth with the knowledge, dignity, and belief that not only are they intelligent and gifted, but that they can be anything that they want in life, and do so legally and ethically. They are sharing that being dumb has never been cool, and has only landed people in one of two places…prison or the grave.

Let’s do our part to save our children and future generations. We no longer have excuses now that we have a Black president…trust and believe that the nation and the world is watching. It is time to step our game up and stop waiting for that 40 acres and a mule…go get your own land and resources, and run a business at the same time.
